Hydration Vs Moisture - Do you know the difference?

Updated: Jun 21, 2021

Do you know the difference? Chique hair face body fill you in on the most commonly misdiagnosed skin concern EVER!

Did you know there’s a difference between the terms Moisturising and hydrating when it comes to treatments and skincare products? Well there absolutely is! As skin therapists we’d like to educate you all on the differences between the two. It’s important that you feel confident when discussing your products in salon with your therapist and know that when you head home you have made the right decision.

Firstly, we need to remember that our skin is an organ, and what we eat and drink can affect it. It is critical that we keep our bodies and skin hydrated especially in the summer months. As the heat is super intense it tends to draw increased levels of water from our bodies causing dehydration, proving a great challenge to us in replenishing it. We do recommend increasing your water intake to 2-3 litres of pure water per day.

Chique TIP ( Different body masses require different volumes of water. A really cool way of working out roughly how much you should be drinking is to divide your body mass by 20. This will give you the number of glasses of water you should be consuming per day.)

Now in saying that, here’s the tricky truth, although not drinking enough water per day will definitely worsen the signs of dehydration in our skin and body, to help fix our skins current state, we move to a more topical solution (THE HYDRATION SOLUTION). When we drink and eat something, these substances still need to undergo the bodies natural processes before becoming affective therefore applying something topically to our skin which will start the natural healing process and encourage the skin to build hydration levels once again.

Have you ever felt like your skin needs a massive drink of water? This may actually be the case. With such a wide variety of products on the market today, as a client it can be extremely overwhelming to work out necessary ingredients in each product and the benefits of each and how they are going to work for you. The most talked about topic in salon with clients today is the difference between moisture and hydration. To break it right down for you, dehydrated skin lacks water and therefore needs hydration or water. Dry skin lacks oil and therefore needs to me nourished and moisturised. It is so important to understand the difference between them so that the correct treatments are performed and proper products are purchased.

From a clients point of view, think of it like this……

Hydration makes our skin silky and soft, but it won’t stay that way without an oil barrier protecting it and allowing evaporation which will leave our skin feeling dry and flaky. Equally, to put oil on already dehydrated skin may encourage a smoothing effect, it will still lack the hydration that makes it feel soft and elastic.

Now that we have explained the difference between the two concepts and you understand the benefits its time to find the right products to suit your concern. We have listed our absolute must haves in salon to help you combat your concerns.
